The “Love Effect” of Giving Gifts

Would you like a simple way to increase the love between you and your family/friends? Here is one of the easiest solutions. For no reason at all give them a gift! It doesn’t have to be expensive and it can even be handmade.

Here is the evidence for it:

The Prophet  sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ) said: “Exchange gifts, as that will lead to increasing your love to one another.” [Al-Bukhari]

So today just make or buy a gift that you think a family member or friend will love! Send it to them in the mail, if they live far away, or hand it to them the next time you see them. Make sure to smile too as this is also a sunnah!

‘Abdullaah ibnul-Haarith ibn Hazm, may Allah be pleased with him, said: “I never saw anyone smile more than the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam.”  [At-Tirmithi]

Jareer ibn ‘Abdullaah Al-Bajali, may Allah be pleased with him, said: “The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, did not keep himself from me ever since I embraced Islam, and whenever he saw me he received me with a smile.”  [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Also, when you receive a gift please remember this important lesson:

‘Aa’ishah  may Allah be pleased with her said: “The Messenger of Allah  sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ) used to accept gifts and reward people for giving them.”

This signifies the importance of giving something of, at least, equal value back to that person if you are capable of it. If not then, “Whoever does you a favour, respond in kind, and if you cannot find the means of doing so, then keep praying for him until you think that you have responded in kind.” [Abu Dawood]

So stop right now and make or buy a gift for those in your family or a friend. If there is a broken tie of kinship then prioritize giving a gift to the person who you aren’t currently speaking with. Be brave, strong and kind and in sha Allah reap the benefits!

Jazak Allah Khayr for reading.
